(17:43) User asked assistant to analyze Slack DM with Dave Rosenthal and assess whether BYK is "being played." Assistant entered plan mode and began retrieval.
(17:44–17:47) Assistant retrieved messages in multiple batches (20 msgs each, hasMore: true). Conversation reconstructed below in chronological order:
June 18, 2026 — Evening
(20:43) BYK: "anyway, that's an entirely different issue, re gatekeeping" (20:43) BYK: Vienna teams are overly protective of their "turf," keep asking for "heads up" even when not practical or possible. (20:44) BYK: Detailed the specific incident — codebase had branch protection requiring review from ~5 code owners (including Daniel G), all in Vienna, all unresponsive. Change was "close to 0 changes" with "0 binary change to the core library." BYK used his releng role to become repo admin, relaxed the review rule, merged and deployed the patch. (20:45) BYK: "This was a calculated risk move rather than a reckless motion" (20:45) BYK: "I also wanted to teach them a lesson and I think they will learn from this :)" (20:48) BYK: "I really want us to be more like Facebook's earlier days. Don't ask for permission, ask for forgiveness. Don't be afraid etc" (20:49) BYK: Shared Facebook_Red_Book.pdf (5.79 MB) with comment about going to CKJ to create a Sentry version of it.
(21:18, edited 21:19) Dave: Suggested BYK forgot the "ask forgiveness" step. Recommended posture: "Hey, I snuck under your gate for expediency--sorry, I hope this didn't cause trouble (it seemed safe)... Also, I bet there are others like me as you consider that gate in the future." — contrasted with BYK's actual posture in the thread. (21:20) BYK: "Was planning to do that if I got responses" (21:21) BYK: "To give you more context, I pinged ~5 people individually including David H, nobody responded" (21:21) BYK: [message cut off: "yet they..."]
(21:33) Dave: "OK, but for me, teams getting along >> a PR gets delayed for a few hours. So, please treat that as one of the things you are optimizing for
