Toolkit precedes legacy, and only typed HTTP 404 advances sources. Trap: accepting either singleton or array release metadata looks backward-compatible, but conceals endpoint/source mismatches. Fix: Toolkit responses must be arrays with cli@ tags; legacy latest responses must be singleton objects without the prefix. Malformed HTTP 200, 401/403/429/5xx, TLS, and transport failures remain terminal. Preserve the selected UpgradeSource through changelog, GHCR, delta, cache, prefetch, and download.
